Lower Control Arms

I am getting real tired of this subject. There are at least 15 threads about the parts books being WRONG and lumping ALL HHR and Cobalt parts together. Seems like every other month somebody tries to argue that the books don't lie.
This includes the GM and Moog books. They all agree that the ball joint that fits the LT/LS and Cobalt fits SS. This is incorrect. (that is a PERIOD). We will all be happy if someone comes forward and supplies a tried part number that works.
The fact is that the ball joint stud is larger on the HHR SS as is the pinch on the steering knuckle, by a mm. Many have been fooled and installed the "fits all" parts and have come here asking about the front end banging, wandering etc.
Some ball joints for some Cobalts do fit the HHR SS, but nobody sells them.
I did get the Moog catalog to add a disclaimer to their book. It now says "fits all, does not fit HHR SS".

What gets me is someone produced the ball joints for the SS and you can't buy them.
I don't see anything that would change in the geometry of the arm inself between all models.
Hubs don't seem to be a problem for the SS, but getting a CV shaft is another problem.

They are probably out there, but the books don't list them and they no longer publish specs. Not even a good parts guy can find them, if you can find a good parts guy.
In the days of paper books there were reference books so somebody could find a part not listed that would work. This is the reason that part numbers get changed so often, they consolidate the numbers of like products. Unfortunate for you SS owners, fortunate for the teenager at Advance Auto Parts.

From the part number thread:
Lower Control Arm - SS models ONLY (FE5 suspension)
IMPORTANT: they are only available thru GM - No after-market suppliers make a compatible part at this time, even though they may say the parts they have are for all HHR's
- GM - P/N: 25930724 - Right
- GM - P/N: 25930725 - Left

I received my control arms a couple weeks ago. Hubs have arrived also. Waiting on the struts and a couple insulators. Then the great rebuild. Do you guys recommend tie rods as well? I got them at Rock Auto also.

The front end rebuild went great. They were indeed the correct lower control arms. I also replaced the hubs, struts and end links. My 45,000 mile end links were clearly past it. Had it aligned and I am very happy.
Look at the damage to the rear bushing after 130K. Both sides were the same.
