Morning rattle
On my 2010 SS with 115k miles, about a week ago I had a shop install new timing chain, balance chain, tensioners, and guides. They also did an oil change. The car has been great until yesterday I noticed it is starting to rattle again after it sits for a few hours on initial start up. Once it starts, it wont do it again until it sits for a few hours. Some have said it could be the cam phasers and others have said if they didnt use a ac delco oil filter it can cause problems which I know they didnt. Im going to put a delco filter in it today but Im sure it wont be that easy of a fix. Any ideas ??

It could be tensioner wasn’t engaged correctly.

Scan for codes. No CEL?! Pretty sure it’s not an oil filter problem. And any quality filter is fine when properly installed. You’re conflating it with the thermostat. ACDelco strongly recommended. But that’s not it either. What led to the timing job? |
More importantly, which timing chain kit was installed? Was a replacement front guide upper bolt installed?

I used the Cloyes brand kit for the timing chain and balance chain, guides, tensioners, etc. The funny thing now it's not doing it. It sat for several hours and it didn't make any rattle at all. I don't know what's going on.
I did change the oil filter with a AC DELCO brand. I don't think that fixed it but for whatever reason it's not doing it. I don't have any cel and it seems to be running fine. |
Sounds like typical phaser rattle.

Good that it’s not rattling anymore. Fresh clean oil and a new filter! Enjoy the ride!
I was concerned the shop didn’t follow along with proper torque specifications and engagement of the tensioner. |
Whoever suggested the oil filter is a pinhead. Let me guess; Farcebook or Reddit?

Well... Actually it rattled after sitting only like 30 min last night on start up.
I Started it first time this morning and no rattle. It seems to come and go. You all think it's still the cam phasers acting up? |
Who said that?
More likely the tensioner didn't get deployed or the guides are installed incorrectly. typical phaser rattle |
