Might just consider a GOOD all season tire.

It is not like the HHR is the kind of vehicle that reallt requires a winter tire.

Most good All Season tires perfrom nearly as well and the HHR with FWD and all the electronic controls make it pretty much a no brainer to drive on the worst roads even by the most unskilled winter driver.

Winter tires are good but the truth is they are not required on this vehicle like they would be on a RWD BMW 3 series and the like.

All vehicles benefit from a good set of winter tires when dealing with snow and ice conditions. A good set of all-seasons is better than anything else but winter tires will be significantly better.

I've heard from a co-worker that it's difficult to find winter tires even here in Alberta because of the demand in Quebec. I know Costco had a good stock at the end of October but I haven't checked since.

YA', Kitchener-Waterloo area with all seasons... They get their fill of snow and they need snow tires. Streamers off the lakes can swamp them. Just east of them was something like 60 cm(24") in a couple of days.
Go south dude, pay the duty... it's cheaper than here!!

Getting snows is like night and day. Even with GOOD all season tires on my wifes mini van, snows are so much better....especially since she drives all over town for work.

For us, snows are a must in upstate ny.

We get snow. Just this week I had to drive in 8-10" and just 30 min north of here they had over 2 feet. We get Snow of Erie and if the wind is right we get if from Huron and Erie. Got to love those white outs like this week.

All in all 85% of all the drivers here get by without winter treads. A few trucks and RWD cars but other than that we have no issues.

I don't think we are any better skilled drivers [Lord knows some here are not very skilled at all] here than there and most of our cars deal with snow fine with out any special tires. In fact the HHR drove perfect even when I pushed it to see how it would react. I even was pushing snow with the front air dam on my street.

Don't know what to tell you.

And yes I agree winter tires have better traction. I am only saying we don't need the extra traction here as we get around just fine.

Also note many in the area work for Goodyear and Bridgestone as Goodyear has its headquarters and tech center here as does Bridgestones tech center. I now many who work there as well as well as family and none I know use winter tires.

i've never gotten snow tires for any car yet. I live in Indiana now, but i used to live on the west side of Michigan (lots of lake effect) and the east side of Michigan. I never really knew so many people got them until being on this forum.

I wouldn't say the cars i had were optimal for winter driving (90 sunbird, 91 lebarron, 96 jimmy, 99 jimmy, and an 05 aveo). Actually looking at the list i would say i had horrible cars for winter, but I haven't had any real problems over the years. I've been in a few ditches, but that's always been on back country roads (where my parents and inlaws both live). I'm interested in seeing how the hhr will do. People say the tires are horrible, but i'll give them a test. Traction will always help, but winter driving skill comes in handy as well. Nothing like driving the sunbird in 1-2 feet of fresh powder, or the blizzard that hit michigan last easter in the aveo. 30mph in a whiteout keeps you awake on the expressway.

Thanks at least I am not the only one who has noticed winter tires used here.

Even thought we don't used them here it is good for us if they buy them With so many here working for tire companys. So I will not tell anyone who wants to spend the extra money not to spend it.

I forgot but we also have the Handkook and Kumo Tech centers here to.

We ued to have Michelin, BFG, UniroyaL and General Tire too but they moved south...... Too much snow. ...I am not kidding

By the way you want fun in the snow drive a Pontiac Fiero for 3 years like I did. Pontiac Builds Excitment! It ran straight ahead fine but you could not turn it with no weight up front. Also with the short wheel base the rear would swing around very easy like a Jeep in 2WD. My big block Elcamino also was a little fun with the weight all in the nose but I always got where I was going on just GT Qualifyers and Eagle GT's.
