i'd like this to take me no more than 30 mins so i'd like to know everything beforehand instead of surprises.

Funny you wrote this. Have just completed my first oil change on the HHR and it was a snap. Takes a 15mm socket for the oil plug and a 1 1/4" socket (big) for the filter. Believe it is 32 mm in metric. Either works.

I jacked up the car with a floor jack behind the wheel, normally where the jack itself would go.

It was a breeze. Took 5 quarts of synthetic (I choose Castrol). I was amazed to find three chunks of metal in the filter - doing its job I guess.

Think my HHR feels like it just had a shower. Maybe an enema.

This site is just so great! I had wanted to know what size the filter socket was a was able to find on an old post.

Now, I am on to installing the new EMC rotors and pads!!!

Mine was a breeze. Pick up phone, call dealer, make appointment, confirm they use Synthetic, enjoy free oil change. :)

Dealer I purchased from does that as an incentive on all the cars they sell. I get up to 5 a year free for as long as I own the car.

I have not got to the oil change part but I will be using 530 synthetic by Sabre Chem called Syn Pro Oil. It outperforms Mobile one it all tests. I know the guy here in Tulsa that engineered it. And I will have the dealer do it because... well... Its just easier for me and cheaper.

Do I need to jack up the car to change the oil? I have no jacks or ramps. If I buy ramps could I drive it up on the ramps and change the oil?

I'm interested in doing this since it is a hassle to wwork with some of these garages. But I'm not a wrench monkey and I don't want to screw anything up.

Also, what do you do with the old oil? And how much money do you save in the long run? Local place advertises $59 oil change for synthetic.

Unless you can squeeze under the car your going to have to jack it up. If your doing this on your SS I don't think your going to be able to use conventional ramps from the auto parts store. Because the front Fascia wont clear the ramp.

Yeah - I was thinking the same thing. The referenced thread showed an HHR up on ramps, but it was not an SS. I also thought the front fascia and possibly the running boards could be an issue in using ramps.
