i did my first one at 3k cuz it was free at my dealer, then i got my 2nd at 9600 still had 27% on the DIC. im sitting at 13k now with 60% on the DIC. everything seems fine. i used to do the 3k changes but im going to stick with the DIC now... if you drive it really hard you should still get over 5k out of it..

I did my first oil change on all 3 HHRs at around 50% (range was from 5,3XX - 5,9XX at 50%), from there on I wait until it gets to single digits and yes, 12K is very realistic. I have noticed that in the cold weather (below freezing) that number is reduced and my percent to oil change racks up faster, but in SC you could see higher miles on a continual basis.

There have been several threads about this and many will tell you that you are wasting money changing it any sooner than what the DIC says.
I really had a hard time since I have always been a 3K guy, but GM warrants these things to 100K and tell you to follow the DIC.

I know I should read it, but does the manual actually say follow the DIC? On my Grand Prix, there is an oil change interval chart in the manual, even though the car has a DIC.

No way I would let my first change run 10k. I want to get anything out that may be floating around inside cause it is new. I did mine at 5k but I should have changed it at 3k. Switched to Mobile1 and will let the rest of them go till the DIC says to change the oil from here on out.

I did my first change at 3,159 miles with the oil life at 69%. I was interested in seeing what the oil looked like and if any metal shavings or particles were present.
I have used Blackstone Labs in the past for oil analysis. That is a sure way to tell the status of the oil and anything present in it.
I will probably change it at about 50% oil life next or 5,000 miles.

From the 2008 Owners Manual

When the CHANGE OIL SOON message comes on, it
means that service is required for your vehicle. Have
your vehicle serviced as soon as possible within the next
600 miles (1 000 km). It is possible that, if you are
driving under the best conditions, the engine oil
life system may not indicate that vehicle service is
necessary for over a year. However, your engine oil and
filter must be changed at least once a year and at
this time the system must be reset.

The oil filter should catch all the debris that could damage the engine, and it's rated for extended use.
