Sorry, but I can't help on the PAL issue, but I am sure someone on the site will chime in.
I just use the front plug for my Sansa Fuse with over 4,000 songs and I loaded 6 disc with MP3 files burned on so I have over 750 pluse songs on disc in my radio alone.
Needless to say I always have something to listen to.

I also have the PAL in my HHR SS but I do not have a 6 changer. As far as I can tell the size of the single CD radio and the 6-CD radio are the same. I do not think the PAL is crap as I compared to other 3rd party offerings and it offered similar features and works well. In fact the only complaint I have is I wish the HHR steering wheel had a next and previous track button so I didn't have to glance down and hit it on the radio.
If you have a 2009 with a USB port you should not need the PAL as that is compatible with the iPod and a few other MP3 players as well as simply using USB memory sticks with MP3s on them.

I have had a PAL in mine for almost a year now and it works fine. It takes a while to figure it out but once you do it isn't bad. If you have XM with your 6 disc then I dont believe it is compatable. There have been problems with the XM and PAL.
I will agree with you on that one. I am pretty sure that you will see USB ports on many GM cars coming out in the future. I have even contemplated changing my radio out for the 2009 with the USB but I think the BlueTooth functionality is a part of the OnStar Unit which is too pricey to upgrade. I would love to have hands free through the radio for my Cell and the Ability to voice activate my songs like the Ford Sync system. Maybe some day...
