Cool removed air filter cover

topped off the coolent sunday, it was low (?) and thought i'd check the air filter, took off the cover and blew it clean with the compresser, started it before putting the cover on, and right away noticed a difference . took it for a drive, and it was a totally different monster . drove about 2 miles going nuts. I would like the technical guys to voice in on why this is not heathy for the vehicle . because the filter is not going anywhere and there was a major difference in the power of the ss. one of the few times the blow off valve was very noticeable . I urge you ss owners to remove the air cleaner cover for a mile and let me know what you think. and if there's not a problem doing that with that type of filter, mines coming off and being tossed. maybe the excess engine heat is an issue, but the bottom of the air cleaner is still there,, is that enough to keep the intake air temp down? what do you think? it seemed to gain 10-20 hp - is this possible ?

You are adding heat by removing it. It might feel good for 5 min. or so but once you get to normal temps and stop lights you will feel the heat soke.

it is said that every degree cooler gets you 1 hp. like a intercooler. what the other guy said about engine heat. also you are getting better flow. the aftermarket stuff uses a cone filter which has a box around it so only cooler air is taken. the ultimate would be a snorkel that funnels outside air into a air box with a cone. maybe 5 hp. plus the noise of less restriction.

Yeah I think the ram air on last gen firebirds and camaros added 5-7 hp. From forum comments I dont think the hhr airraid intake does that much though.

Slightly incorrect. Every 10 degrees gets you 1 HP (approximately).

it was well-known on the 4th Gen. F-bodies that the ram-air (on the SS and WS6 models), although GM claimed it was "functional" added very little power. It was much more of a cosmetic effect than anything else. In other words it looks cool but that's about it.

yeah, if you look at the under side of those hoods, the way they swirl the air arouund, and how cramped the ducting is, you lose most of that "ram air" velocity, and it becomes pretty much a moot effort.

More slightly incorrect.

The SAE formula works out to about 1% HP for every 10 degrees. (Note the "percent"!)

Sorry, Snoopy, you missed one. Your test score is now down to 99%.
