Yep, Don't have a lid on mine. I have a big hood scoop, the hood is cut out for the air box opening, and it directs a lot of cooler air into the airbox area and also into the engine compartment[which forces a lot of the hot air out].
I have a AEM/Fram air filter that is way bigger than the stock one[so big I had to notch bottom of air box to fit]. the filter stick out of the air box enough that I can't put the lid back on, unless I put stock filter back on. I have driven this setup in the rain[not really heavy], and so far I have'nt had any problems, and seems to work much better than stock setup.
I did this mod, just over a year ago. "Moon"

So it's like a cheap water injection mod. It isn't like your going to get a whole puddle in your intake.

next time you bring yours to the track if it is during the day and over say 80 degrees I am willing to bet in the quarter you will loose almost a tenth with the lid off compared to on especially if you have to sit in the staging lanes and move up every few seconds.

I keep thinking about this... I would want a subaru style scoop that attached to the airbox, with a hole cut into the hood... I'm completely OK with it being off-center.

Bingo! I have been looking at the subaru one too and thinking I need to get a boneyard HHR hood, a WRX hood and some cut off wheels! LOL (dont wanna hack a stock SS hood)
I think an old school cowl induction scoop would work good and look trick with less water worries.
