smoking at start up

2009 SS 9,000 miles.
When I start my HHR after not being started for 20 hrs I will get puffy clouds with oil smell. This is not vapor from T-pipe. Does not do it when starting during the day of after setting just over night. Any ideas?

how often should oil be changed

White smoke, dealer call today said was caused by not changing oil. Said oil needs to be changed every 3000 miles. Does any know the time GM says oil c=should be changed. The oil % said 72% when I had the oil changed. Dealer said I caused turbo damage but two changes, ever 3000 miles, might fix it.

Dealer is full of ****. If you follow the sensor, you are not causing damage. There could be a short puff of smoke on startup, but that should be it. Try another dealer or call GM because their line of bull was rediculous. FWIW I wait till 20% or less on the oil life monitor and have no smoke.

That service advisor has no idea what he is talking about. Take it somewhere else to prevent any damage to the motor. Sounds like a bad head gasket.

Yeah - I think I went down to 7% last time. Hopefully I won't go that low the next time, but I'm not concerned that it will have an ill affect on the SS.

Valve guides are generally the first suspect with start up oil smoke. It should be noted that the LNF, due to the VVT programming, acts pretty weird for the first few seconds of a cold start. If it is not blue oil smoke, I wouldn't get too bent out of shape about it.

Black smoke=fuel--Blue=oil--White=water(antifreeze-acompanied by a sweet smell). These are usually at cold a start .The converters on cars can hid many issues once they are up to temp . There is a GM repair notice out on some of their 4cyl engines about a coolant leak from internal plugs but it should also cause some milkness of the oil. Hope this isn't an issue on the HHR SS .--Bob
