Thwwwwwaaaaaccckkkk!!!!
Most good insurance policies will replace windshield glass under comprehensive without applying deductible (I have had 3 windshields replaced in the past at zero cost even though my Allstate policy and prior to that Progressive has had a $500 or $1000 deductible). The crack needs to be longer than the width of a dollar bill, or they try to repair it first. Ask your agent. The claims had no effect on my claim history or discounts I receive.
Got to wondering if my experience was not the norm, and did a google search and came up with this from a glass repair site:
"In cases involving a broken windshield, it is wise to consult with your auto insurance company and examine your policy to see what exactly is covered and how much they will pay. Your rates may or may not increase if you file a claim to repair your broken windshield or other broken glass in your vehicle.
It is a good idea to talk to your insurance company representative about your comprehensive coverage; however, your rates should not increase because you had your broken windshield repaired. Most insurance companies waive the deductible for windshield repair. This varies from company to company, so it is a good idea to check with your insurance company about the deductible waiver"

I will be calling my insurance company soon. Over the weekend I heard another thwack noise but couldn't see where it hit, since it was pouring rain. The next morning I noticed a huge crack from the top center downward into an L shape, with each portion of the L being at least 8". Then this morning I got hit with another rock which left another ding.
Maybe I should just wait until the windshield collapses in on me. I can see getting the windshield replaced only to get whacked again soon thereafter.

Wow - almost identical to my crack!
I got a stone and a chip (no crack) on my way home from the Dealer, my first experience with any windshield damage. Then a month later picked up a second chip right next to the first. Haven't gone to get either repaired yet, but between these two hits and the number of stone chips on the hood - I've concluded this vehicle is a stone magnet.
windshield chip
According to my insurance agent, if you get the chip repaired it can prevent a crack from forming. I don't know how that works but the insurance companies would prefer to fix a chip rather than replace a windshield.
