Question What is this thing?

Just bought a 2008 Chevy HHR SS manual and this is my biggest question about the car, what is this thing? It looks like a holder for an iPhone. Any other ideas? Thank you!

Welcome to the site, hmmm, is it loose or fastened with those 2 screws? It might be a spare rear hatch release switch , it’s definitely not supposed to be there

It is screwed down, thought about unscrewing them and seeing if anything is attached.

If this was a fleet car in a previous life, it may be a mount for a laptop?

So I just unscrewed it and there is a wire going to it. It seems like a charger for an iDevice and the lightning port broke off because it is in the DUMBEST place possible. Really dumb...

Lightening or USB? That would answer part of it. The wire should go somewhere where the Voltage is reduced to 5 Volts.

If you follow the wire it will probably end at either the fuse box under the radio or at the radio , carefully disconnect it and cut a piece of rubber mat the same size as that tray to cover the screw holes.

Just an update, it definitely goes to the fuse box and is used for charging. I plan on doing exactly what @Oldblue suggested once spring/summer finally starts here in Pennsylvania Thanks for all the replies!!!
