I think you would be safe with at least 600# the rear seat has a capacity of 3 plus gear behind the seat... We have had more than that in ours....

Load capacity is located on your yellow tire label on the drivers door jam. Each HHR is different due to how the vehicle is equipped.

Although the label in my HHR only gives 750 lbs as capacity, I've had over 1,000 lbs loaded at once.

Hey ChevyMgr.....

I notice how people confuse LOAD CAPACITY with TOWING CAPACITY. Maybe an explanation is do (or people can read the explanation in the Owners Book, if they have time).

Not necessarily in this thread!!

If any of these weight ratings are exceeded, you are trying to haul and/or tow too much. The ratings are GCWR, GVWR, RGAWR, Maximum Trailer Rating or Tongue Weight. Snoopy, It doesn't matter if I explain each one of those ratings, everyone is going to say they hauled more weight than that or towed more weight than that with no problems. So I say read the book.

But for those who want to follow the book, don't exceed the Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) which includes the curb weight of the vehicle, any cargo carried in it, and the people who will be riding in the vehicle. This rating is on the yellow label on the drivers door jam. Towing is much more complicated rating and the manual states maximum of 1000 lbs which includes the weight of the trailer.

I would say use your own good judgment on how much you are willing to haul inside your HHR. When I load mine, I take care to make sure the load is distributed as much as possible and keep an eye on how the rear suspension is compressing. Heck just last week I hauled just over 1100 pounds of Bamboo flooring. It went from the back of the front seats all the way to the lift gate. My HHR still had enough suspension travel in the rear and it actually rode rather nice - no noticeable front end lift or steering problem.
