Who's running Reg Unleaded vs Premium
Why not do a test, couple of tanks of 87, couple of 92 on your trip.
My thoughts are the SS "can" safely run on 87, BUT anytime an engine that is created for best performance on 92 is run on 87, it is backing the timing back. Any mechanic or racer will tell you that if you back the timing back from optimum, you reduce efficiency, which translates to less power, less mileage. Can you measure it? Try it and find out. Let us know.

I run E10 (10% alcohol). Adds a couple of octane points vs regular, but still shy a couple from premium. Costs less than regular. Appears to be approved based on statements in manual.
Based on energy content of alcohol vs gasoline you do lose a bit on mileage, but negligable with only 10% alchohol. My mileage - 26.7 average, about half in town half on highway. Course I live in Iowa where corn is king. (Still we get a choice. In Minnesota you get E10 when you fill with regular with no choice; though a few pumps do offer regular for "vintage" automobiles.)

With the GM turbo upgrade, the premium "suggested" becomes mandatory as someone pointed out a few pages back. What is the minimum octane that would meet the standard necessary for the upgraded tune? I find a lot of stations that use 91 as premium rather than 92 or 93.
91-92 is enough to work with 99% of the required cases.
91-93 Octane Here
I have been running 91-93 Octane in my car since the 2nd tank of gas. I like feeling the extra oompf! But over the last year I have added the Jet Performance Stage 2 Chip that also requires this as well.
Mileage is good on Highway driving. I use cruise control and it consistanly stays above 31-36 MPG depending on hills.

Unfortunatly I live in CA (I say that for many reasons)... so the best I can get is 91. I'd buy 93/94 EVERY TIME if I could get it. Instead, I live with 91... and I'm 99.44% done with my methanol/water injection setup to bump things up a bit.
93 once in a while. normally i am stuck behind someone so regular 90% of the time. 1st and 2nd a very relaxed dont hear any detonation when on regular.
lastly nowhere on the gauge cluster is there a request for premium as was the case in my buick
