Why can't Chevy build a real SS?
Why can't Chevy build a real SS?
Come on..... 14.8 seconds at 98.5 mph??? Thats no SS I know and remember.
Even the lowly heavy metal 1969 Nova SS with 375 HP did 13.8@105MPH...........WITH AN AUTOMATIC!!
A 1970 BUICK GS with an Automatic ......... 13.38 @ 105MPH.......Yep heavy ass grandpa's BUICK.
The HHR is MUCH MUCH lighter then those cars and is still a whole second behind and cannot break 100 MPH with a 4 Speed BOX!!!!! NO EXCUSE.
I dont want to even bring up the 5th fastest American muscle car off the showroom floor 1970 Chevy SS Chevelle 450HP 13.1@107MPH. Now THATS an SS.OK I did.
We have been dumbed down into believing the SS is really a muscle car.
Those who have never been in the driver seat of a real muscle car will never know the feeling of driving off a showroom lot pinned back in the seat with a deep rumbling sound that matches the performance..
Oh for the good ole days for those of us that were there,
On the bright side the HHR does match up well with the 50th fastest production muscle car ever made with the at the small 2 seater 1964 289ci 271HP Cobra 4 speed.
Thats not terrible company to be in apparently by todays standards,

Put the HHR/SS in the mountains with the Chevelle and the HHR will be showing tailights to his windshield. Also, like has been mentioned before, the SS package was originally a trim level, not just a performance package. You could have a Nova SS back in the day with a six-cylinder!
Just be happy that you have a performance model to choose from. The vast majority of car purchasers could care less what the quarter mile of a car can do or if a car can handle or what ever. They happily sheep along in traffic.
My take on performance today is not that of quarter mile performance. Its that i know that this car not only is a quick vehicle, but also provides me with excellent steering and feedback. Excellent braking and emergency maneuvers for everyday life.
Also GM's SS lineup is now performing up to par for what you get. In the past they strapped okay cars with the SS badge. Now they are moving toward performance that mean well. My previous car was a 04 GTO, that car had no SS badge, but was quicker the 98% of the vehicles that are sold in the world. The HHR SS will be faster then 95% of the cars on the road. Besides my slow 350hp 04 GTO was able to run a 13.1 quarter mile fully stock (not me but a member of another forum who is an excellent driver) , while some of the 400hp GTO's have hit high 12's. Not bad for a stock GM vehicle.

Here is a post on another forum going over the list of "production cars" that make the fastest 1/4 miles yet in reality aren't production cars.
http://www.ls1gto.com/forums/showthr...roduction+cars
#1 Veyron - BS. Those skinny sidewalls would not hold up to a real 10.2 show me the pass.
#2 S/S Barracuda - NOT a production car
#3 S/S Dart - NOT a production car
#5 LT2 Vette - One of a Kind Handbuilt GM Prototype engine NEVER SOLD
#6 LS7 Vette - Well it's an actual car, but this time is on Drag Radials, WTF!
#7 ZL1 Vette - Only on drag slicks, and only 2 made, though with a legal RPO #
#9 Mosler - It's a damn kit car, how is that legal?
#19 Thunderbolt - Again, NOT a production car. No title, no equipment, etc. Race car only
#24 Cobra 427 - Riiiight. A 1997 built kit-car is not a real Cobra, sorry. Again, not a real car.
#30 Brock Coupe - Again, a damn kit car! What are they smoking???
#32 Ramcharger - Wow, now instead of listing just the "bare" S/S drag car only time, they actually gave the NAME of the famous S/S car that set the time. This is a race car people!
#57 Cobra - Yay, a 5.0 Kit car
#88 GTO - That's the 421 Super Duty car that has been heavily documented, and admitted as, a ringer.

well I've owned a lightly-modded 98 Z28 since new with an estimated 370HP at the crank and lemme tell you, it's a lot of fun. But I want to sell it now and get something with some oomph and also gets better mileage than 15mpg.
That's why the HHR SS is appealing to me and hopefully I will own one by the time spring arrives in 08.

We have the 07 HHR 2.4 and a 2006 Corvette. Both are fun to drive. Vette is fast. Fastest car I've owned. my NEW fast cars had others but not fast
64 GTO
68 442
70 Road Runner slowest of the bunch
87 Grand National
Corvette is as fast as I need. 29 MPG highway
