HOW TO: bypass valve spring replacement
This is my "how to" on how to replace the bypass valve spring. If you are having intermittent boost issues like I did, its the cheapest place to start.
this might be easier than an oil change:lol: 1. purchase a new (I chose stiffer than factory) BPV spring. mine was $13 with shipping from dejon powerhouse. 2. open hood, remove the intake tube(from airbox to turbo) by loosening 2 clamps at both ends https://www.chevyhhr.net/gallery/fil...uberemoval.jpg https://www.chevyhhr.net/gallery/fil...intaketube.jpg also you will have to remove a braided line that attaches to the tube. you just release the little clip, and the hose should slide off(with some difficuly in my case 3.remove the 3 bolts on the bypass valve https://www.chevyhhr.net/gallery/fil...ypassvalve.jpg 4. mine looked like this when i pulled it out....remove boot and factory spring https://www.chevyhhr.net/gallery/fil...lveremoved.jpg and you end up with this https://www.chevyhhr.net/gallery/fil...venospring.jpg 5. put new spring and boot back on https://www.chevyhhr.net/gallery/fil...enewspring.jpg 6. re attach the BPV cover with the bolts. this part is tricky because the new spring wants to pop out...I hand tightened the 3 bolts while holding the cover. then cranked the bolts down with a ratchet. 7. re attach the intake tube, tighten the 2 clamps and re attach the braided hose thats it! about a 15 to 20 minute project for me.....smaller arms may save you a few minutes... so far this has solved my boost issue where I randomly see 12-13psi at WOT instead of ~19-20psi :twothumbs: |
Nice write up. When I replaced my stock one with the Forge unit, I found it easier to use a 1/4" drive ratchet. Then final turn with a box end wrench.

nice post for how to replace spring, thanks

I should tell everyone that I used a 10mm socket for the bolts...1/4'' drive ratchet is exactly what i used.. thanks fireman and old blue:twothumbs:
edit: and i realized that to replace the whole valve wouldnt be much more work.... |
