Installed new Maplight
Installed new Maplight
Have wanted to do this for months and finally completed it tonight. Got the idea from Lee333 and it really works well.
The maplight is from a mid 80s Mustang (Capri too) and it swivels to direct the light in the direction you want it to go.
I took several pictures of "how to", but used too high a camera setting to post here. If anyone knows how to make them work, please advise.
You can see from the pictures that I had to grind down the oval sunroof/LED switchplate to accommodate the maplight. Measured carefully and used the Dremel to make it match up.
Then had to remove the black box located inside of the headliner (sort of twists out) and reverse it, as the switch box had to be rotated 180 degrees so I could cut the switchplate. Look carefully and you'll see what I mean.
Also had to trim part of the black box to allow it to fit back in when rotated.
Then added about 3/8" of wood to box in front to serve as a shim/place to screw in the maplight.
Most importantly, needed to find 12 volts and it was right in front of me. There is a wire coming from the rear view mirror which I tapped into. Attached a ground wire to the wire next to that one, which is the antenna I believe.
Put it all together and it works great. Pictures make it look as if it doesn't match for color, but honestly, when you look up, it really looks fine. I have attempted to find a good color match for the tan of the switchplate, but no luck yet. Am going to try to find an extra white light bulb for it. We are getting spoiled by LED white.
Thus ends the constant reminder from my wife "The lighting in this car is *^%$(%$ lousy". Best part for me is that I did absolutely no damage to the headliner. Only the switchplate was really changed, and I could buy a replacement for say $184.00 from GM
Thanks Lee for the great idea.

Yeah - As I said in the post, have looked for a good color match to the switchplate, but it is a real off-color cream/off-white. I actually have two of these lights and have painted the other one three or four different times, with poor color results. May go to my buddy at the paint store and do a color match, but it is plastic and would prefer a plasti-coat paint that can be sprayed. Will get 'er done though.
