For those of us that still smoke-Installation of a usable ashtray today

Well it finally happened I pitched a cigarette out the window and unknown to me it came back in the back window and burned a small hole in the back seat and now I have to recover the small seat. There is a bright side to this I now have a real ashtray installed in the dash. I used the old cup holder style ashtray from the PT I sold. I marked out the spot on top of the top dash storage box and the drilled a pilot hole and then used a jig saw to cut the circle a little bit smaller the needed. I then used a dremel to open up the hole to a perfect fit for the ashtray also had to grind out the backside of the hole to have a little extra so the lid would open all the way. For now I have a rubber band starched around the under side and pushed up against the bottom of the lid to hold it tight. I will replace the rubber band with a O ring when I get a chance to go get one. The ashtray extends down into the storage box but not enough to worry about.

The reach so far hasn't been a problem, but its not as far as it looks.

You could have probably installed in the AC vent and that way you could have redirected the smoke into the rear seat area

Your right Hillsdale and in Tennessee it is against the law to pitch a cigarette out of a car. I have the Letter from the Tennessee Department of Transportation stating that someone turned in my tag for doing it and they even sent me a little folding pouch to put my butts in, as you can see I didn't use it because if I had I wouldn't have a hole in my back seat.

It isn't likely you will get a response from him.
