On Board - Kaiserslautern, Germany

I pick up my 2008 HHR next week at Cox Chevrolet in Bradenton, Florida. Will keep it with my Bigfoot 32" Class C (Duramax Diesel) in Royal Palm Beach, Florida near West Palm Beach. I live in Kaiserslautern, Germany and will retire in July after 44 years - 31 with the US Army Engineers and now as a civilian with the Defense Information Systems Agency. Will be spending 4-6 months each year towing my HHR around the US. "Home" is Newburgh, Maine. Have a Hobby 600, German-made 24' Class B RV, here in Germany and will be "full-timing" at an Austrian ski area in the winter.
This forum has been a great help in learning about the HHR and helping to make it my choice for a "dinghy", or as some say a "toad" behind my RV. For those interested I intend to add a Blue Ox Base Plate and tow bar, and go with the SMI Stay-in-Play supplemental brake system. Would be glad to hear from anyone towing the HHR and how they set theirs up.

Welcome to the site.

I was in Kaiserslautern a few years ago. Didn't get to see much of the place as we were passing through on our way to go visit the German part of the family in the family town of Essweiler. Beautiful country out that way.

Welcome Peter, I currently pull a 5th wheel with a "double" (boat or Jeep), have never "toad"ed the HHR, but would be interested in how the the Blue Ox install and towing goes. I would be very interested in seeing how the base plates look on the front end if you would take a few pics after your install.

Here's a link to the Blue Ox web site where you find the installation instructions for the Base Plate. Some excellent pictures of the front-end with the removable tabs on for towing and removed for looks.

If you go to the iRV2 forum and search on HHR you'll find lots of very positive comments about the HHR as a toad. It's at iRV2.com
I won't be back in the US until May to get pictures. My son-in-law is coordinating the pickup of the HHR and getting the tow package on.

Thanks for the link, those are the pics I was looking for.
Install looks very straight forward and the look with the removable tabs is much cleaner than I expected. I have an LT and a SS, looks like the SS wouldn't be able to be towed with the Blue Ox.

Your post made me remember the good times we had at the K-Town Aand W thirty some years ago. It was nice to find a little bit of home while stationed in Worms. Thanks for helping me remember.
