Intro..new to forum, old to life
Yep, I'm on a fact finding mission here. I 've owned eveything from Etype Jaguars to Ford Diesel Excursions in my 76 years on this planet. All my toys gone now, and I'm looking for a nice little gas sipping 4 door hatchback to take my wife and (occasionally) my 3 dogs (160 lbs. altogether) on trips here and there. I live in the mountains and have snow to deal with. Dogs not young so have a tough time jumping up into the high clearance SUVs. We already have an AWD crossover, so we can deal with snow.
Don't need a new car, so looking at around the years '05,'06 and looking at Mazda3, Vibe/Matrix and HHR. A fella on another forum answered a lot of my questions, and on paper, the HHR looks good. To tell the truth, I've never been in any of the choices above, wanted to do research first. Really, the only question I have is whether the HHR power plant is enough to deal with the mountains hereabout. This question applies to all three, of course. So I'm looking for some real life anecdotal experience in this regard. Hopefully, you owners can steer me in the right direction. I do like the retro look...reminds me of.....well, I won't get into that.

I have owned a 06 HHR LT2 which has the 2.4L engine and took a trip to Tenn a few years ago we stayed up in the mountains and honestly had no problems going up and down several times a day for over the course of a week... this was going from an elevation of 800ft to 2500ft I do not know anything about the other cars...
I can also say this.. the HHR is one of the best most fun cars I have ever owned... tons of room.. handles great and the 2.4 has plenty of power

You will have plenty of power to do the mountain twistys with a SS. I have a 2lt panel, and a SS, the SS is the way to go up hill.
Welcome to the forum, go drive an SS, it will shorten this search of yours.

I dont think you can find a better car/truck if you are looking for good gas mileage and storage.
I owned a fully loaded 2.4l LT
and now have a 09 hhr ss
I think you would be happy with either one.
if you have any specific questions feel free to ask
