Also a coolant leak can foul up a catalytic converter real quick.

i'll have to reread the other post on using the scanner to monitor the O2 voltages that donbrew talks about. I really don't want to put a lot more money into the car already unless it starts misbehavin something fierce.

When monitoring the sensors the #1 won't tell much it is supposed to jump around radically, #2 should be pretty steady.

Intermittent P0420 is a bit odd. You should check the fuel pressure. I suggest cleaning the throttle body for the irregular idle. Maybe do a Seafoam top clean (an oz or 2 in each cylinder overnight).

Cleaning cats is a lost cause on modern cars, they are different from the old ones; this is like rev 2 or 3.

Do you have an idea of what would cause this? >>> whenever the engine decides to run a little rough at idle but if i put it in neutral - like when i'm at a light, the idle immediately becomes smooth?

AC compressor or the belt tensioner may be causing drag. You might try removing the serpentine belt, and drive it around the block.

I am wanting to convey this for anyone else who may read this post and have similar issue

so today while driving on US19 around 50-60mph for 10-15 min with occasional red lights, finally came to a light where the car decided to run crappy while waiting for the light to change.
previous stops were all smooth. As soon as it cleared itself on it's own, the CEL came back on - p0420 code.

Prior to that i had the scanner running and took some screen shots of the 2 O2 sensors. #1 did as described - fluctuations. #2 stays fairly consistent around .65-.80V but more often a closer range staying in the .7X V
last pic is the MODE $6 readout with 'failure on catalytic bank 1'

I'm wondering if it might be a few things going on - none apparently causing mpg issues or overall performance issues... for now... but I'm guessing it can't be good long term and something will fail

#1 O2

#2 O2

#2 O2

RPM @ 55mph

#2 after car threw 0420 code and CEL came back on -

goes along with the p0420 code
