[I.T. Rant] Save docs and proj on the server not the local computer

Execute:I.T.rant

We've told and told our users to save their files on their individual drive space on the server (folder = first initial & lastname), and NOT in My Documents (user profile) on the local workstation. We've shown them how, step by step. Yet, I still get angry users p!ssing and moaning about losing all their documents and projects when their drive crashes... because guess where they saved them? Is there no end to the ignorance?

End:I.T.rant

Well, I've never had a hard drive fail but our server goes down all the time. When that happens we have 1300 employees not working. If we saved some files to our hard drives, at least some of us could be working!

To paraphrase

Negative Ghostrider, the pattern is NOT full.

I've been at the same company with a lot of the same users for almost 7 years now, still have to remind them to save their important stuff on their home drive.

So take My Documents away from them. Problem solved.

That is what I do, the server can crash a lot easier than the individual hard drive. I never use that for storage, I use my own and just back up ever so often. Usually if I have to call our IT for "help", I'm better off just bypassing and fixing myself.

LOAD [User Rant]: Why should I trust saving my important files on a server when these crash more often than the individual work stations? No thanks, I daily back up my important work files on a usb key. At least I can keep on working instead of waiting for the server to come back up! EXIT [PROGRAM]

Servers get backed up, workstations normally don't.

If servers are crashing a lot, they are not properly configured.

But that's just my 20 years experience in systems development talking

Sorry I should've qualified my statement by adding: In my workplace, we have a 3rd party do our IT support. Our main contacts are in company, but at best call it part time support in addition to their core duties.
