In 1985 I owned a '74 Ford LTD 4 door “old mans car” it was puke green but it had a 429 automatic and positraction rear end in it. So it was a sleeper.
My wife had a '80 Jeep CJ7 and a '84 Camaro. Her Jeep was such a stripped down plain Jane model it didn't even come with a radio. It did have air and power steering and power brakes. She also had an '84 Camaro that was also about as plain as they came, but it did have a decent factory stereo with a cassette tape player.
Neither of her cars were particularly 'quick' but they were new enough to be pretty reliable.
The next year we found out our daughter was going to be born. We got rid of the Ford and Jeep and bought a real old mans car. My wife actually cried when we sold the Jeep even though it had been her idea. A brand new1986 Chevy Cavalier. It was a 2 door, with power steering, power disk brakes, tilt wheel, reclining bucket seats, air conditioning, and a factory installed AM radio {whoohooo ! !}.
So again about as basic of a car as they sold. I put a series of different AM/FM tape playing stereos in it starting with an under dash 8 track player.
It was the first front wheel drive car either of us had ever really driven. Her dad had an 80 something Oldsmobile Cutlass Sierra but we were rarely allowed to use it. That first winter was a learning experience for us.
I have to admit the Caviler served us well for many thousands of miles without the need of major repair right up to when the front main seal went bad.

In May of 1985, the wife was driving her new '85 Nissan 300ZX Turbo, I was driving my '83 Pontiac 6000 company car, and we had a little '79 Toyota P/U with small cab-over camper parked in the driveway. Actually, now that I think about it, we may have replaced the Toyota by this time with a '83 Chev G20 van conversion - to tow a travel trailer (which we had not yet purchased).
