American Home Shield

Anyone use them? I have had them for the past 5 years and this will be the last time I renew. We went out ot town the weekend after the 4th. We we got back we found the linen closet door upstairs stuck. I pryed that open and was wondering why it all of a sudden was stuck. Never happened before. Then I noticed the ceiling and what appeared to be a water stain. Crap leaking rook I though. Well The attic door is right there so I pull it down and climb up. Right there is the A/C evaporator with the big pan under that is full of water and overflowing at one corner, right about the linen closet. So I know the problem. I drain the pan some to assist and call AHS to see if this is covered. I can only tell them what I see, a pan full of water. They say yes it's covered. So I set up a ticket. Takes a couple of days (and more trips to drain the pan) but the tech shows up and says a line was clogged. He fixed the problem, drained the pan with his shop vac, and said we should be good to go. I ask about the pan, told him that even with the water drained, I noticed it still had a drip in one corner. He said the pan was pretty rusted and said he would write it up for recommendation to be changed. Although he said there should not be a problem as the pan is only there if a line gets clogged. We paid the $55 service charge and though, good to go.

Wrong, AHS called today to tell us the coverage is not covered. WTF, why? They told us it was routine maintenance, and not a "problem". Ok, I will pay for the clogged line, but the pan still leaks. This is kinda how it went,

Me-I don't understand how the pan is not covered. When I called this in, I told you the exact problem I was having. The pan was full of water and leaking.

AHS-The pan only fills with water if you don't do routine maintenance and it fills with water,

Me-Then why did you tell me it was covered, when you knew in fact that the pan should be dry unless there is a "problem" that you apparently don't cover.

AHS-The claim is being denied since the problem was routine maintenance.

Me-THis is not acceptable. I would have selected my own company if I knew you didn't cover this. I want to speak to your supervisor.

AHS-There is no supervisor to speak to. The claim is denied due to non maintenance on they system.

Me-Then why tell me it was covered when I called it in. I know the calls are taped, I wasnt to speak to a supervisor.

AHS-I am a supervisor, the claim is denied due to non maintenance.

Me-So you own the company?

AHS-Sir?

Me-If there is no one else to speak to and there is no one over your head, then you must own the company.

Me-Who do I speak to to for a refund on this newly renewed contract I just reopened? (July 2th)

AHS-There are no refunds, but you can speak to the accounting department.

Me-Transfer me.

AHS-I can not transfer you but I can give you the number.

Me-You can't transfer a call to another line in you agency?

At that point I just hung up.

Bottom line, don't use American Home Shield for you home warranty.

That sucks, Solman....

I'm on your side. How could it be due to lack of routine maintenance??? Changing a filter is routine, maybe even hosing down the outside coils. But, to check to see if an evaporation discharge line is unplugged and flowing freely......

Especially one that is "hidden" in an attic space...out of sight, out of mind !!

Sorry to hear your bed news, but I think you need to take it to the next level. IMO problems like these are few and far between, and these lines as well as water heater drain lines that fail to function and cause more damage are the reason we carry this protection. These lines are in areas we seldom check and are not something most people are knowledgeable about. If wires get old and break down and cause a fire, were we responsible to check these too? If hail damages a roof and it starts to leak months later is this also something we all should be aware to check ourselves? I think Insurance companies are necessary but I also feel they have become another great American rip off scam. The more they can push off as a non covered issue adds to their bottom line, so they just deny all claims. When we stand up for our rights, then we get results and they allow the claim. I’m sure a lot of people get spanked when they fear being dropped by an insurance company or just swallow what they try to feed us. I say take it all the way to the top get them to make the repairs and then fire them. Just be sure to use a lot of honey while dealing with them.
