American Pie, an interpretation or two.........

My daughter and I have a lot of fun with youtube, . I've turned an eight ear old Hannah Montana fan onto the traveling Wilbury's, Heart, Pat Benatar ( she keeps Pat in her portable CD player as well ), Blondie, Dick Dale, and dozens more.

Well, she has also developed a Star Wars habit which naturally led to Weird Al's
The Saga Begins.....

But being a cool dad, I had to explain Weird Al is one of the few practitioners of the art of pop music parody, so we went back to the original, Don McLean's American Pie.

So she sings the real one on the way to the bus this morning
Dad's job done!.
Next stop, Spike Jones.....

THEN, I found this interpretation of American Pie, trying to explain what Don Mclean was saying in the song. Very cool. Perhaps not right on, but certainly it gives one pause to think. Besides, details? Don's not talking...............

From the site:
"The meaning behind the lyrics of Don McLean's American Pie. Janis Joplin, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, War & Peace, drugs, murder, Hell's Angels and the Rolling Stones. And, of course Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper."

I'll be showing this to li'l Katy as well. Time for a history lesson

Since I can't access youtube at work (firewalls) I don't know what they say the song means, but my English teacher in 11th grade said it was about Buddy Holly dying in the plane crash. Is this close to the youtube link explanation?

It takes each line and shows pictures of what he means...

For example it says "And there we were all in one place" and there's a picture of Woodstock.

He says "For 10 years we've been on our own" and he's referring to the song being written 10 years after the plane crash.

Things like that.

You know, according to an article I had read, a while back, Don McClean has never admitted to what the song was actually about, when asked. He says people will not believe him anyway.
