Best Laptop PC deal?
About using the college bookstore--check the prices everywhere. When I was going to law school, I checked out the "deal" at my college's bookstore. Two options, neither what I wanted in brand or features. I wound up getting what I wanted at a significantly lower cost by going through my employer's EPP with Dell. All I had to do was take my computer over to IT services once I got to school to let them install the atrocious Novell client, which if your son's school is worth the money you're paying, they won't have anything that says Novell on it anymore.
My laptop for work is a Dell Latitude D620 with 2 GB RAM, Core 2 Duo processor. Great machine.
A friend of mine that also works in the computer industry is a big fan of Acer laptops....good bang for the buck.

I use it, installed it on my older Dell desktop and bought a new laptop with it on it, works GREAT for what I do, no complaints, well, cept for that constant "sure you wanna do this" pop-up. But, then again, it kept me from one or two mistakes....
I currently have two sons in different colleges and neither one are allowed to play games online. They can purchase a wireless account and use it for online gaming. Most homework is accomplished online so the LAN is way too busy to allow gaming. One of them occasionally has trouble accessing the specialty software he needs to complete his engineering homework. We don't complain because he using shared software and didn't have to buy a copy.
Hmmm. Sounds like back in 2000 when they decided to block the Napster port on our LAN, but we wound up just using other download services that used different ports.
When I was in law school (WWLS), our university actually encouraged online gaming on the weekends by setting up big plasma screens in the student center where you could come play, or the kids in the residence halls could play along too.
