Denver Broncos Player Darrent Williams Killed
DENVER - Less than 24 hours after playing in the last game of the season, the Denver Broncos say 24-year-old Darrent Williams was killed.
According to Denver Police, Williams was killed in an early morning shooting after someone with a gun pulled up alongside the white Hummer stretch limousine he was riding in.
Police say that it happened near 11th Street and Speer Boulevard at 2:30 a.m. on Monday.
Some of the streets in the area were shut down during the investigation.
Three people were shot and police say the limo was sprayed with bullets. At the scene, 9NEWS could see what appeared to be eight bullet holes in the limo.
Police say the three were taken to area hospitals where Williams was pronounced dead.
The names and conditions of the two other victims, a man and a woman, were not immediately released.
9NEWS is investigating whether any other Bronco players were also in the limo.
Team spokesman Jim Saccomano says he spoke with Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan and others in the organization after police told him of the incident.
"Complete shock. We're speechless. It takes words away. A terrible tragedy," Saccomano said.
Saccomano says police called him at around 3 a.m.
Police say they are still searching for suspects and interviewing witnesses.
"We have no motive yet," Jackson said. "We're hoping to talk with witnesses to find out where they were coming from, and that might give us some clues."
Hours before the shooting, the Broncos lost to San Francisco 26-23 in overtime, eliminating them from the playoff race.
Williams played in the first half of the game but sat out the second half with a shoulder injury.
However, during the game he had a sack, a forced fumble, and led the team with seven sacks. He also returned two punts for 50 yards.
Williams, a second-round pick in the 2005 draft out of Oklahoma State, started nine games as a rookie due to injuries. This season, he took over as the starter for Lenny Walls alongside Champ Bailey, and had 88 tackles, 78 of them solo, and four interceptions.

My thoughts and prayers go out to this young mans family. What a horrible senseless tragedy. Will let you know if I hear more.

Ok heres the thing, thousands of people die every day, but if a famous person dies, they make a big deal out of it. I am so freaking tired of people and the fact that they care about only the famous. My aunt died a month ago, and no news agencies coverd it. People need to understand that these things happen, just let it go.
I'm sorry you feel that way, however, this is the lounge and we can post off topic stuff that interests us. As it states above in the lounge rules, if you're not interested, don't respond.
Now every one now knows how our service men & women feel being in thier Military HUMMERS even they are not Bullet proof Either. We can be Shot & Killed no matter were we are or what we are INN, but we can send people into space. Now that I do not understand.
Thats terrible news, and I am very sad to hear that. I watched the Denver/San Francisco game last night with great intresest, becouse if Denver lost then the Kansas City Chiefs would be in the playoffs, which has been my favorite team since I was a kid. I was obviously very excited San Francisco was able to win, but this news has taken that joy and turned it to sadness. My sorrow goes out to the family of Darrent Williams, and the Denver Broncoes.
Update!!! From rockymountainnews.com
Discovery of Tahoe 'a step forward'
The discovery this morning of a Chevy Tahoe that police had been searching for since yesterday is "a step forward" in the investigation into who killed Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams, but it is too soon to determine whether the vehicle was involved, a Denver police spokesman said.
Investigators are working to process the SUV for evidence.
"It may rule out some things as much as it rules in some things," spokesman Sonny Jackson said.
The Tahoe was found between 5 and 6 a.m. at 38th and Himalaya, after an anonymous passer-by called 911 to say he wondered if the vehicle, which had been inexpertly painted black, was the "vehicle of interest." The rear license plate had been removed, but the front tag, 665 OBS, was still attached to the vehicle.
Jackson called the abandonment of the SUV "an act of desperation."
He declined to identify the owner of the vehicle, but other sources have said it is registered to gangmember Brian Hicks, 27, who is in Denver County Jail on unrelated drug and attempted murder charges. Hicks was behind bars when Williams was gunned down, and it is unclear who may have been driving the SUV on New Year’s morning.
