Employees In Trouble For Not Singing Karaoke
BANGKOK, Thailand -- The state-owned oil company of Vietnam has reportedly disciplined employees who failed sing karaoke, news reports and employees said Wednesday.
Vietnam Petroleum Finance Co, the oil firm's financial arm, demanded that 21 workers write "self-criticism" essays after they declined to join in the singing and attend a retreat following an official ceremony, according to the reports.
The Bangkok Post reported that eight department heads were temporarily suspended in the same matter.
"On Monday, I was called up and told to make a 'self criticism' report," one of the senior employees told Deutsche Presse-Agentur, the German national news agency. "And now I have been suspended from my job."
The employee, who asked not to be identified, said a contract-signing ceremony between Vietnam Petroleum and the Song Ho Corporation took place in Hanoi over the weekend. When it finished nearly 10 hours later, many tired employees decided not to stay for the karaoke contest, he said.
According to local news reports, one of the company directors was upset when he found out, and ordered that the employees be punished.
Karaoke is extremely popular in Vietnam, particularly among businessmen and officials, the Post reported.
