I'm sure our economy would improve in more ways than just farming. 
We should follow Amsterdam's model of taking the illegal part out of non-dangerous drugs and center our attention on the hardcore stuff like Heroin, Coke, Meth, Ecstasy, ext.. Stop The War On Drugs has lots of good info on the subject.

We are loaded with Meth labs around here. Being a small farming community, we were unprepared for it's impact. Pot grows on its own here and you can regularly see helicopters flying around looking for them, so they can be destroyed (usually burned, I wanna hang out with the cops when they party! ).
