Federal grand jury indicts Barry Bonds

Federal grand jury indicts Barry Bonds
By PAUL ELIAS, Associated Press Writer 3 minutes ago
Barry Bonds was indicted Thursday for perjury and obstruction of justice, charged with lying when he told a federal grand jury that he did not knowingly use performance-enhancing drugs.
The indictment unsealed Thursday against baseball's home-run king culminated a four-year investigation into steroid use by elite athletes.
"During the criminal investigation, evidence was obtained including positive tests for the presence of anabolic steroids and other performance enhancing substances for Bonds and other athletes," the indictment read.
In August, the 43-year-old Bonds passed Hank Aaron to become baseball's career home run leader. Late in the season, the San Francisco Giants told the seven-time National League MVP they didn't want him back next year. He is currently a free agent.
While Bonds was chasing Aaron, the grand jury was working behind closed doors to complete the long-rumored indictment.
"I'm surprised," said John Burris, one of Bonds' attorneys, "but there's been an effort to get Barry for a long time. "I'm curious what evidence they have now they didn't have before."
The indictment charged Bonds with lying when he said that he didn't knowingly take steroids given to him by his personal trainer, Greg Anderson. He also denied taking steroids at anytime in 2001 when he was pursuing the season home-run record.
He is also charged with lying that Anderson never injected him with steroids.
"Greg wouldn't do that," Bonds testified in December 2003 when asked if Anderson ever gave him any drugs that needed to be injected. "He knows I'm against that stuff."
Not only do I hope he is found guilty and serves time, I hope they take that record breaking ball and stick it up his a**. He's no pro ball player. He's just another athletic jerk thinking that sticking needles in himself will make him a better player. All it did was ruin a career and put another black mark on professional sports.

Chris Webber and Bill Clinton were slapped with perjury,...both lied, and both got off light... but this is Bonds were are talking about. I dont think he should get more time than, say, the chemist that invented the "clear" or "cream", or Balco founder Vic Conte... Each recieved less than 6 months IIRC. Bonds did lie, and he deserves some punishment, but I think he will get hosed by some stiff penalties...
I know outside of OJ, Bonds is the most hated sports figure in the country, easily, but I dont see how you can give Bonds more time than the men responsible for the doping of hundreds of athletes.

Isn't that the same charges that Martha Stewart and Libby (separate issues)were convicted off??
If convicted, the penalty should be the same, IMO.
But, I do think it's further tarnishing of professional sports.

I dont know though... Basically Bonds is a customer of Balco. The main "Dealer", Victor Conte, got 3 months in prison and 3 months of home confinement. If this was about being fair, Bonds should not get more than that. Hell, the chemist, Patrick Arnold, that invented that junk only got 3 months.
The whole point of this investigation was to bring down Balco, and it succeeded. I understand getting Bonds and others to admit their wrong doings, and I agree with the perjury indictment, but I have a feeling they are going to give Bonds more time than the real major players of all this.

they are gonna stick it to the black guy...again
just like everyone loving Ali until they found out the man had an opinion and was turned on rather quickly.
OJ was fine and an "all-american" until he "killed" a white woman.

its perjury, light sentence no biggie. more of a "we told you drugs are bad m'kay, now we finally are able to get ya" than a real punishment.
dude... seriously... has there been a post yet that wasn't a racial hot-button issue for you? the way i see it there are only two possibilities from your posts. either a) every single person in the world and especially the united states is racist/the man/ and out to do irreparable harm to the black man or b) you yourself have some racial issues that you really need to work out.
Okay, look- Bonds did steroids, no doubt. And it sucks and alot of the above is true about the tainting of sports, etc... But the fact is that we have a Grand Jury and a US Attorney that have been spending WAY too much time and money on a matter that should be between players and baseball. The US Attorney is mad and embarrassed- these guys DO NOT like to lose- and will go to the end of the earth to WIN this and restore his reputation. He wants Bonds to admit it- say uncle. Plus, seriously, he's not the only guy that did it and there are alot more guys doing other things like bennies in baseball. I would like to see how much of a stretch was needed to come up with a positive test. And for what? To get him to admit he lied so they can send him to prison? The whole thing is freakin ridiculous, IMO.
