Florida Storms

Are all our Florida members okay after last night?

Deadly Storms Sweep Through Central Fla.
By Associated Press

TAVARES, Fla. - Severe thunderstorms tore through central Florida early Friday, damaging homes, causing power outages and killing at least one person, authorities said.

A dispatcher at the Lake County Sheriff's Office confirmed there were fatalities but did not say how many. The woman, who would not give her name, said damage included "every kind of damage you can think of."

Mike Turner, a technician with the National Weather Service in Melbourne said it appeared the fatality occurred in the Lady Lake area, northeast of Orlando. No other details were available.

"Everybody is so busy that we can't get a hold of anybody." Turner said. "We'll know more as the sun comes up and the weather is starting to calm down a bit."

About 20,000 customers were without power across a wide swath of central Florida, Progress Energy spokeswoman Cherie Jacobs said.

Florida Power & Light reported about 200 customers without power in the DeLand area.

"We're activating the state EOC and mobilizing damage assessment teams to move into that area," said Mike Stone, spokesman for the state's Department of Emergency Management.

As many as 14 have been killed 50 miles north of Orlando.
In Tampa, lots of wind, rain, wind, lighting.
All is okay here.
Thanks for asking.

Wow! I've got to get off the computer more often and pay attention to what's going on in the world. Didn't even know any storms were near. There wasn't even a slight breeze in Miami.

We're okay here. My daughter was with her grandparents up in Lake County where a lot of the damage occurred but she was (thankfully) not in the direct path.

Update: The death toll is now 19 and could be rising.
Thoughts to their Familys, and how thankful that not much damage was done here.

It really sad that many of these people moved from the coast to escape hurricanes. Now they find tornados can be even worse and there was little or no warning. For some reason Florida does not have tornado sirens like other states. If I know bad weather is coming during the night, I'll leave my TV on so I can hear when they broadcast an emergency message. That's the best we can do down here!
