GM announces major investment in auto plant (in Mexico)

That's Government Motors gratitude for you! From the Wall Street Journal:
U.S. automobile giant General Motors Co. said Tuesday it plans to invest close to $500 million in its Ramos Arizpe plant in northern Mexico to produce a new line of engines as well as a new vehicle...
"We estimate that these technologies allow for a 9% improvement in fuel efficiency from current engines," Lieblein said, adding that the investment will directly create 390 jobs in Coahuila state, where Ramos Arizpe is located.
Another $215 million will go toward upgrading the factory's production lines to build a new vehicle for the domestic and international markets, she said, noting that the investment will be key to maintaining 400 jobs.
Assembly of the vehicle, which wasn't named, is set to begin in the last quarter of 2011. GM plans for it to "give long-term viability to this plant by gradually substituting some production volumes."
Lieblein said General Motors has invested $4.1 billion in Mexico over the last four years.
US taxpayers bailed out GM, next came the Volt, and now this is the payback.

 

And What about us unemployed in the states?

 

Wow, This is the change we are receiving.

 

This is the plant that is making the HHR for the 2011 model year. Before the HHR, I believe it made the ill-fated Pontiac Aztec. So, what new vehicle might it make? The Granite?

Same old, same old... cheaper labour... it's a race to the bottom, and it certainly didn't start with the USA's latest president, in case someone falsely tries to make that case....

This is the nature of multi-national corporations. No one likes to see the jobs leave the country however...

I wonder if Germans complain about the new VW plant opening in Tennessee or their plant in Mexico??? (although the cars to be made there are for the N. American market)

 

All companies will have to go global or disappear, it's a fact of life and there's no turning back now. Not saying I like it, but it is what it is.

 

The GOV bailed out GM and that other car co. WITH Mine and YOUR money so when do we get our new cars. They used our money without asking so were are our cars?:

 

Did they also put this much into rebuilding or upgrading a plant here in the states?


I know locally they closed one (Ontario, Ohio) ............... Those people won't be buying a new car anytime soon.
