The second car I owned, back around 1952, was a 1948 Buick Super 2 door. Had what they called a "Torpedo Body" as I recall. That was a classy car, and that "Straight 8 "engine sure had a distinctive sound. And the antenna was in the same spot as the HHR. Only difference was the base was connected to a knob inside the car so that you could rotate it down to line it up with the center post of the windshield.

Sad to see that these new "Supers" still only have 4 speed transmissions.

2007 New York Auto Show Preview: Buick Reveals Details on Lucerne and LaCrosse Super Models
Date posted: 03-27-2007

NEW YORK CITY — Saying that it is "reintroducing a famous name from a glamorous era," Buick on Tuesday revealed details about the new 2008 LaCrosse and Lucerne Super models. The LaCrosse Super will hit showrooms this summer, with the Lucerne Super following in spring 2008.

Buick did not announce pricing for either vehicle.

The 2008 LaCrosse Super is powered by a 5.3-liter V8 that churns out 300 horses at 5,600 rpm and 323 pound-feet of torque at 4,400 rpm, according to preliminary estimates. The standard 3.6-liter V6 in the LaCrosse CSX delivers 240 hp. The LaCrosse Super's engine is linked to a four-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy has not yet been determined.

The 2008 Lucerne Super is powered by a 4.6-liter V8 that makes 292 hp at 6,300 rpm and 288 lb-ft of torque at 4,500 rpm, according to preliminary estimates. That is 17 horsepower more than the Lucerne CXS. The Lucerne Super also gets a four-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy has not yet been determined.

The LaCrosse Super makes use of a longtime Buick design cue — portholes — and also gets standard 18-inch wheels. It also has a new waterfall grille, new hood and new front fascia that incorporates a lower grille opening with chrome trim. The Lucerne Super gets a new bright chrome waterfall grille, front and rear fascias, integrated dual exhaust tips and rocker panels.

Both Super models are said to be inspired by the Buick Velite concept vehicle.

Buick originally introduced the Super line in 1939 for the 1940 model year. Buick said it is not known who originated the Super name, but "historians presume they were dreamed up by [Buick General Manager Harlow H.] Curtice, GM Design Chief Harley Earl or Buick advertising genius Art Kudner." The Super nomenclature was inspired by rail travel of the late '30s, especially names for luxury trains.

Ok! Not sure what this has to do with the Supers other than some of the design cues. I think you're looking for the Chrysler Sebring Thread.
