I got my Black HHR 1LT for the Sticker price (16,355, I believe), then asked for a discount for being an "EMS Provider", since Jeep offers this to FF/EMS/LEO, and I made the point that I could very easily just go over to Jeep, buy something, and get a discount, so they gave me an additional $250 off the price. Now we are down to $16,105. I visited another Chevrolet dealership and told the dealership that I bought my HHR from what their price was(it was less). and asked them to match that. They did that. After a trade in (5,500), the all-said-and-done price was around 10,500. Hard to beat.

Now for all those wondering, Royal Chevrolet in Richmond, VA is the best place around to buy an HHR. (Thats where I bought mine!) Steve at Royal made this the best car-buying experience, hands-down.

haggling tips

Like everyone has said. Don't let them talk you into anything you don't want. My wife and I got up and walked out of three dealers before we got the deal we wanted. When you start walking out they will follow you out the door! I still had to go to four different dealers, but I got what I wanted except the color, but that was the color the ole lady wanted and it was her birthday, so I caved in on the color. We got the sandstone and I wanted white. Also go to chevys web site and check out dealers in your area. The ones with the largest inventory might be a little easier to deal with. Hopr this helps. Always remember that when trading in a car, get a general idea of what it's worth before going. Don't accept anything less than what you truly want for it. Also, if you're planning on using your trade as a down payment, DON'T LET THEM KNOW THAT. Hell, don't even let them know that you're trading anything in. When everything has been discussed such as price and such, then kindly let them know that thier down payment is currently sitting in their parking lot. They will not like this but in the end will benefit you.
Me and my fiance did this when trading in his m coupe for our GTO. We knew the car was worth ATLEAST $10K so we said we were putting down $10k in cash. When the time came and everything was almost final, we told them what we wanted for the m coupe and that that would be the down payment as well. They were upset but in the end, they wanted tomake that sale.
Good luck with your new purchase

My advice? Go in one day and let them know that if they make you a good deal, you'll take the car home with you. THEN, leave for one reason or another and make them wait a day or two. I know the 0% is a 72-hour sale, so try making that move on the first day. If they see you walk off the premises, they have people that will call you and ask what they could've done different or what they could have offered you to close the deal. If they see that you're patient and have the ability to wait, that will make them want to sell you the car that much more. If they've already invested time in showing you the car and running the numbers, they like to finish the whole deal up. Good luck, and don't sign anything until you THOROUGHLY look it over - common sense, right?

that's kind of what I did with my trade in except I did all the wheeling and dealing over the phone. They gave me the amount I wanted for my trade in without ever looking at the car. Once the numbers were finalized and they trucked my HHR in, I dropped by the dealership to sign the papers that were ready to go. They actually tried to drop the amount on my trade in, but I threatened to walk and back out of the deal, and they agreed to give me what was originally agreed to. The other thing I had going my way was that I had them fax me the copy of the trade in agreement with the amount specified. So there was no way they could wiggle out of that agreement. Felt good to strike back at the dealership for a change.

Question

Thanks for all the tips!

Keep em comin'!

Going to the first dealer tomorrow. They have two with the trim and color I want. One has 5000 miles, driven by one of the dealer's family members, so they say. They told me I could get the 0% on that also.

One other dealer in town has one like the wife wants, they've emailed me and I sent them a reply. Told them just enough to let them know that I know exactly what I want, about what the invoice price is and that i may not even need financing.

Any other suggestions?
