"Hold Your Wee for a Wii" Radio Show Pulled

A Sacramento area morning radio show has been pulled off the air indefinitely after a mother of three died last week following a water-drinking contest at the show's studios.
Executives of KDND-FM, posted a note on the station's Web site on Monday saying the "Morning Rave" show would remain off the air while the station investigates the circumstances surrounding the death of 28-year-old Jennifer Lea Strange.
Strange was one of about 18 participants on the "Morning Rave" who tried to win a Nintendo Wii gaming console early Friday by seeing how much water they could drink without going to the bathroom. The show's DJs called the contest "Hold your Wee for a Wii."
Strange was found dead several hours later. The Sacramento County coroner said preliminary autopsy findings indicated she died of water intoxication.
"All of you are probably aware of the tragic death of a contestant, Jennifer Strange, following her participation in a contest on the 'Morning Rave' last Friday," wrote Vice President and General Manager John Geary on the station's Web site.
"The circumstances regarding this matter are being examined as thoroughly as possible. We are doing everything we can to deal with this difficult situation in a manner that is both respectful and responsible. In the interim, the 'Morning Rave' is off the air indefinitely."
During the contest, participants were given two minutes to drink an 8-ounce bottle of water and then given another bottle to drink after a 10-minute break.
Fellow contestant James Ybarra said he quit drinking after imbibing eight bottles, but Strange, who placed second, and others kept going even after they were handed even larger containers.
Strange showed other participants photographs of her two sons and daughter, for whom she was hoping to win the Nintendo Wii, Ybarra said.

Yes, i'm sure it's from water... i've heard of several cases of 'water intoxification'
Notorious cases of water intoxication
In a much-publicized case of fraternity hazing, four members of the Chi Tau House at California State University, Chico pled guilty to forcing 21-year-old student Matthew Carrington to drink excessive amounts of water while performing calisthenics in a frigid basement as part of initiation rites on February 2, 2005.[6] He collapsed and died of heart failure due to water intoxication.
New Zealand race-walker Craig Barrett collapsed during the last kilometer of the 50 km walk in the 1998 Commonwealth Games in a non-fatal case of water intoxication.
On January 12, 2007, Jennifer Strange, a 28-year-old woman from Sacramento, California, was found dead in her home by her mother hours after trying to win a Wii game console in KDND 107.9 "The End" radio station's "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" contest, which involved drinking large quantities of water without urinating. Every 15 minutes contestants were given a bottle of water to drink. It is reported that original amounts were very small (250 mL, 8 fl. oz.) and the bottle size increased as contestants progressed. It should be noted though that this information is a preliminary finding, not an official determination. [7][8][9][10]
Other notable fatalities due to water intoxication include Leah Betts,[11] Anna Wood, [12] 2002 Boston Marathon competitor Cynthia Lucero,[13] and Washington, D.C. police officer James McBride.[14]

Actually the reason you can die from "water intoxication" is simple. Drinking too much water can eventually cause your brain to swell, stopping it from regulating vital functions such as breathing, and causing death. If you drink too much water, eventually the kidneys will not be able to work fast enough to remove sufficient amounts of salt from the body, so the blood becomes more dilute with low salt concentrations. The water then moves from the dilute blood to the cells and organs where there is less water. When the brain swells, it is inside a bony box so has nowhere to go, the pressure increases in the skull and you may get a headache. As the brain is squeezed it compresses vital regions regulating functions such as breathing.
The above was different phrases and such that I found on another webpage. The doctor's office I work for was telling me about this and I never thought it true. Just thought y'all would want to know the How and Why of it....
