If the 2nd mouse is that smart, he/she may actually be the 1st mouse.
Let me preach on...........
1st mouse shows up but realizes it's a trap. 1st mouse waits patiently........
2nd mouse shows up and without hesitation goes for the cheese. SNAP ! Goner !
1st mouse then moves in and has a free shot at the cheese.

1st there. 2nd to try for the cheese. All in how the fable is told.
