I love this idea!!!!!
This was an article from the St. Petersburg Times Newspaper on
Sunday.
The Business Section asked readers for ideas on "How Would You Fix
the Economy?" I thought this was the BEST idea....I think this guy
nailed it!
Dear Mr. President,
Patriotic retirement:
There are about 40 million people over 50 in the work force. Pay them
$1 million apiece severance with the following stipulations:
1) They leave their jobs. Forty million job openings - Unemployment fixed.
2) They buy NEW American cars. Forty million cars ordered -
Auto Industry fixed.
3) They either buy a house/pay off their mortgage -
Housing Crisis fixed.
Can't get any easier than that!

Good idea in theory but...........
1) Will the openings be filled or used as part of downsizing measures.
2) Once those cars are purchased, it will cause a demand much greater than capacity. That will cause far too many long term problems to list. (one example: temporary increase in supllies and workforce which will then be terminated because the large one-time purchase will mean that a HUGE number of people will not be buying cars for sometime.)
3) Can't see any issues with this one! Unless people use it to but home which they will not be able to maintain insurance on or pay propert taxes on.

Cost: 40000000000000 (40000 Billions) Dollars.
This 15 times the total 2008 US budget, or around $14000 per living soul in the US.

thanks for clearing up the math on this, i just saw it on another site as well, and it just makes me angry when people don't think it all the way through.
Another way to write it would be 40 trillion, although trillion can be a bit different between the US and Britain.
But none the less it's a 40 with 12 zeros after it.
For anyone having trouble with the math... If you gave 40 people 1 million dollars, that would = $40 million. But if you give 40 million people, 1 million dollars, that number is exponentially higher.
