Red face I'm wondering about the CD players that can play back MP3 formatted CD's.

I've just compiled a CD with 145 songs on it in Windows Media File format (.wmv). This is the first time that I have tried this. Knowing that the stereo system that will be in my new SS (when I get it) is MP3 file capable, will it also be able to play back wmv files? I haven't figured out yet how to convert these wmv files to MP3 format. Maybe I need some advice on how to do that. I use Nero 7. These songs I copied from my CD collection onto my external drive, ripping them using Windows Media Player. I then used Nero jukebox to copy them to the CD.

Don't you mean WMA ? The "A" being audio, a WMV file would be video no?

I found this in the manual.

• Make sure playlists have a .mp3 or .wpl extension
(other file extensions might not work).
I would try it.

There are tons of converters out there, do a search, some are free!

After re-reading my post I just had to pop in the CD to check myself, and sure enough, I got the format wrong. WMV are video files. WMA are audio files. Anyway, when I scrolled down the page, what do I see, sites to find solutions to my inquiry. But, they require payment to use. I was hoping that with the Nero 7 Premium program that I am using that I had what I need.

Wink Just went to your link.

Thanks for the link, downloaded and installed it. Converting files from the CD now. File sizes are almost double now, so I may be lucky to get 100 songs on the one CD. But, that sure beats only having @12-15 cda files on a CD. Will see what happens. Thanks again.

Well, I managed to get 91 out of the original 145 songs on the new CD in MP3 format. That should be good for a couple of hours on the road. At least there is a solution to getting an ipod. And, you don't need to carry a whole bunch of CD's around. I can live with that. I'm still going to look into my Nero program some more, just don't use it much. That is a nifty little "free" program for converting music files to MP3 files.

What bit rate are you converting these at ?? You should be able to get about 200 to 225 songs per 800mb cd ... my standard conversion is 128... at this rate you can hardly tell the difference between 160 or 192 -- which increases the file size but really does anything for the sound quality..

yeah i was wondering what you encoded the file sizes at as well. You should be able to get a lot more then 91 songs on there. I encode at higher then 128 (yeah i can tell the difference) and i can still get more then 91 songs on there.

If you do the math of songs being between 3 and 5 mbs each as a mp3, and take the average of a 4mb song, you should be able to fit 175 songs on a 700mb cd (which is the standard size)

Like I said, this was my first time (cherry boy). I believe the default setting was 192. I got a couple of long songs on there, like Ina-Godda-Da-Vidda, This is the end and such, you know old hard core stuff. Anyway, I'll do some more experimenting. Thanks for the input.

Exactly why I use iTunes and my iPod. I really can't screw it up.

I have about 400 CD's in my collection. Burning CD's is a whole lot cheaper than buying an ipod if you don't have one. Besides, just something that might get ripped off. But, If I couldn't have figured out the MP3 conversion deal, that would have been my next step. I've only copied about half of my collection to my external drive using Windows Media Player and got about 18GB copied so far.
