Milage doesn't match the car fax
Milage doesn't match the car fax
This is not a hhr problem but this thread is for anything not realevent to HHR.
My son in law purchased a ford edge from a local ford dealership.
back in Aug of 2014. the cars tags weren't due till april 2 2015.
He went to the dmv to pay for his tags, and dmv said the car was under investigation for millage fraud.
So they wouldn't issue the tags to him. he went to the dealership to ask whats up and they told him that they were going to get it cleared up today.
Well I looked at the car fax. this what I saw, it says last known milage was 29,875 they got that number from april of 2014 that number was recorded by the dmv four in half months before my son in law bought the car.
Here's the problem. When my son n law bought the car end of august of 2014 the milage was 29,071. 800 miles less than what was recorded 4 months earlier. that would mean he drove the car backwards for 800 miles, lol and then parked the car for 4 months and never drove it. So I smell a rat!
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Tim

PROBABLY an oops. If the dealer is indicating it will be cleared up TODAY, wait to see the answer. If it meets your satisfaction it still may be worth a couple of $$ for the inconvenience.
If not cleared today or not to your satisfaction then an attorney MAY be appropriate.

The car was wholesaler from a dirty broker that replaced the odometer. It either broke and was replaced without the proper paperwork or it really has 200987 miles on it. Either way it was against the law to sell it to a consumer.
the car was traded in by the second owner how we caught the millage discrepancy was dmv wouldn't let him register for new tags, because dmv caught it. and my son n law and I looked at the carfax and it is really easy to see the millage doesn't match. So either the guy that traded it in rolled back the miles or the dealer did, my guess the millage is off by
6000 to who knows?

It is illegal to sell a car that has had the odometer "modified" without the proper paperwork!
You cannot "roll back" a modern odometer. It is computerized. Someone may have innocently changed something out or somebody intentionally did.
In either case the sales contract is null and void.
CarFax is B.S. they only report what is reported to them. Six months from now you may find out that the car was totaled, but the insurance company just got around to notifying the authorities. That happened to me.
They don't plan on you getting reports every month, mot are satisfied with what they hand you.
"Trust me, I'm a used car salesman." Yeah, right.

And the check is in the mail! Don has a point about about the mileage can't be messed with on the newer cars. But a clerical error is very possible! Not good for a legal document like a car sales contract.
Modern cars CAN have the odometer's "reset". It's done all the time. You can buy a used cluster and have it programmed to any mileage, but it's supposed to be programmed correctly to the vehicle it's going into.
Since we are talking 800 miles, I'd say someone fat fingered it at some point.
