Ahhhh yes....that ol' great "white lighting". But, I think you are correct regarding the roots. Heard one time that it was started by the "good ol' boys" and they excelled because of being such masters of road speed. Don't know if it's true....but logical.

Not so much the moonshiner part (although it's pretty neat) but the fact that NASCARs used to be based off production cars. They had the same or similar dimensions, and they had a similar engine that anybody could buy in a showroom. The cars from back in the day like the mustangs, superbirds etc..were badass. The "cars" today are a joke. The Charger is ok I guess. The Monte has a v8, but is a front driver, and oh boy watch out for those Fusions and Camrys!! Even with all my *****ing I still enjoy a good race.

 

There are other sanctioned bodies that do use actual stock cars, but NASCAR seems to be more of a rolling billboard than anything else.
If the cars didn`t say they were Toyotas, Ford, Chevy, or Dodge you never would`ve known.

 

No it doesn't bother me at all because if NASCAR stuck to it's roots it would be gone. In today's world sports must have a large fan base and large advertising base or it goes away, especially a sport that so many feel is detrimental to the environment. If you want to be able to watch the races on TV then the sport HAS to move into the 21st century, otherwise it would just die out and be nothing more than the Saturday night dirt track. The cars are becoming more uniform so that the multibillionaires aren't the only ones in it. The majority of the new rules are to help level the playing field so the little guy can still participate, without them there would only be Roush and Hendricks and Gibbs cars running. Take a good look at Indy racing, it is almost dead.

 

Most all of the first NASCAR drivers were Moonshiners. So NASCAR has it's root's as such. NASCAR was started in the South, and has grown to what and where it is now. The make of car was also a moniker for NASCAR. Win on Sunday, buy on Monday. Believe it or not cars such as the Hornet, Studebaker, Hudson,AMC were in the lineup then too. Supposedly there was one MG in one race early on. Camaro's, Mustangs and Cuda's were not in these races. Althought the IROC cars are made from this lineup of Pony cars. But then again, IROC isn't totally NASCAR, it's several sanctioning bodies, it's just that NASCAR teams built and support them, along with NASCAR sponsoring the tracks. My personal feelings on these new cars, we haven't seen any fuel injected, or turbocharged cars running in the circuit. By the same token, I didn't know Toyota made a Carbeurated V-8. That is hard for me to figure how they can run these, and still be considered STOCK. I enjoy racing very much. I used to drag race, but as NASCAR, it became too commercial and expensive. SCCA I suppose still has a few Sunday races in the local parking lots or tracks for some to enjoy, it just never blossomed into the full grown enity that NASCAR did. Toyota in NASCAR? Well we'll see how it goes, like someone pointed out, my HHR is built in Mexico, my Monte Carlo and Impala in Canada, my Astro in Maryland, and we have a Toyota Plant here in West Virginia. So other then the name, I suppose Toyota is more American than Chevrolet is now, and Chevrolet is still the dominate car in NASCAR. To put an end to my drudgerey, whatever makes the big bucks is what it's all about Today.

Charles, I like what you said too...that's also very true. Just like everything else in our life, things evolve into much more than they began. NASCAR is just another example of that evolution.

 

I guess the biggest thing that bothers me is how commercial NASCAR has become. I loose track of how many commercials are in a race. I don't know how many times they have come back from a commecial and there has been a lead change or wreck. I also love how they only cover the "big names" granted my guy Sterling has been doing horribly, but I would like to hear about what is going on. Now more and more of the "young gun"drivers are starting to sound alike. Jimmie Johnson is a good example of this. When they ask him a question you can predict how he will answer and how he will sound. I guess thats just how NASCAR is evolving. After all they want more viewers and more "fans" for more MONEY.

 

Did you folks read this story about AT&T and NASCAR, sorry, but I feel this NASCAR thing is really getting out of hand, racing started out as free enterprise, now it is who has the most money and can scream the loudest.(Threaten). NASCAR needs to remember what made them NASCAR, (Competetion). Banning a sponsor is going to be the axe to them if not careful.
