Even if they did get a key from the dealer, Remember to start the HHR with a replacement key it needs to be programmed first using a working key, so they would not be able to drive it away. I bought some replacement keys from a dealer. They would not do the programming for it to start the car. The only way they would do that is to have the car towed to them.

You didn't indicate if your method/routine was the dealership requirement, GM's or just your own. I THOUGHT I was clarifying the issue.

I forgot to mention that the HHR's with a remote start at least. do have the security system that will sound if the HHR is entered and cannot be shut off until the ign key is in and the engine started.
But hey, Check out the link to the internet tracking device, now that would be a good idea. I had toyed with the lojack idea before seeing that.

Since we're on the subject of new ways to steal cars..
Around here people are going into locker rooms at the gym, stealing keys out of unlocked lockers and returning late in the evening to find out which cars are still there and with any luck, they find the car they have the keys to, they go trash the car and abandon it somewhere. Has happened to someone i know only they knew about it and had their car towed from the gym. Solution, lock your lockers.

Around here most people just throw a rock through your window. 
I know so many people who have had their cars stolen around here it isn't even funny. 
Most of the time it's older cars you can start with a screwdriver by popping the column. 
New cars make it hard as hell for your average car theif or joy rider to get. Most of the time on newer cars it's snatch and grabs, smash your window and take whatever is valuable before anyone comes. 
Those people are usually sloppy crackheads. If someone really wants to to get into your car without anyone hearing the trick they use is piece of porcelain (from say a broken toilet) to smash the glass. The porcelain impacting with the glass creates a silent smash. 
I have also heard of people using some EMT tool to pop the window but have never witnessed it. 
Before it's asked, yes I have known a few car theifs in my day and no I wasn't one of them. 
The main thing to remember is if someone wants to get into your car they will find a way and it's usually as simple as a rock, not as complicated as getting a spare key made.
