Ouch!

Well first off we are ok, but the Silver Bullet has her first ouch. We took a road trip to Dallas on Thursday to pick up a Harley project bike. On our return trip to Austin on IH 35 some jerk pulling a car hauler with side boards and no tail gate was a few cars ahead of us in heavy traffic. He had several electric motors bouncing around in the back of the trailer we could see once the traffic in front of us scattered to avoid flying metal parts. A rather large pulley was flying out from under another car right at us, we had no where to go and traffic behind us didn't give me enough room to break hard. The front bumper and left head light took a direct hit at about 60 mph. I have to say I'm very impressed with the small amount of damage done but the head light will need to be replaced, that is some tough plastic it was knocked out of alignment and a deep depression was made in the lens but it didn’t break. Not much can be done for the deep scrapes in the plastic on the bumper and head light bezel but it will need to be painted. We got the license off the truck and trailer but couldn't get the driver to stop. I just can't believe someone could be so uncaring and careless, someone could have been killed had one of these heavy metal parts gone through a windshield. I am just glad no one was hurt and it didn't cause a major pile up.

Too bad you didn't get the plate info on that nutbar driver.

Up here, they would have been charged under the motor vehicle act for not properly securing the load in the trailer.

I think I would have followed him to get a plate number then called 911. Unfortunately, stupid things like this happen everywhere. I just had my roof replaced and they hauled away the old shingles on a flatbed trailer made for hauling vehicles. How many nails do you think they dropped on the way to the dump? Better yet, how many flat tires occurred because of them?

Hope you can restore your HHR back to it's prior beauty!

Thanks for all the well wishes we did manage to get both plate numbers and did call 911 to try and have him stopped legally, before someone was seriously injured. I must have closed my eyes at the time of impact because I never saw where the pulley we hit went, I was just cretin it was coming at the windshield next. And the traffic was elbow to elbow and nose to butt once things were flying. These motors were really bouncing around in the trailer; I have no idea how many he started out with or how many may have come off the trailer before our mishap. I just hope I can get his information from the police report, so his insurance has to pay and not mine. I'm sure it won't be good for me if my insurance has to cover it. I've never had to deal with a hit and run or this type of accident in the past I'm not sure how it will work out. If anyone else has I’d love any advice available, and thanks in advance for those who give it freely.

Well I contacted the Police station in Texas where the accident occurred for a copy of the accident report and learned a lot. Both the sergeant and the traffic officer I spoke with were very friendly and helpful. Did you Know that in Texas if a unsecured object falls, separates, spills, or otherwise comes off another vehicle and strikes another vehicle, or the ground before it strikes your vehicle it is then considered a road hazard and not the responsibility of the person who caused the accident by not securing the load. They were going to investigate and give me his personal information so I can attempt to get his Insurance to pay for my damages but it doesn't look hopeful.
