I also have ATT/Yahoo DSL service and found their online protection to be a real pain, and full of bugs. I uninstalled that and went back to my Symantec (norton) that i receive from work, and have no problems at all.

 

Not long ago I was using Noron , the suite, and having problems with the computer. I , after exhaustive efforts, got Norton uninstalled and put in AVG which on the first scan came up with over 20 viruses that Norton had failed to detect. Once they were removed the computer ran like it did when I got it. I do not trust Norton any longer and will never run their product on my computer again. Norton cost me $50 / year and could not detect a virus that a Free , AVG , scanner could come up with. I have been using AVG now for over a year and have yet to get a virus so I will stick with it..

no no no NO....do NOT use norton .. it sux and is a memory hog on your system...

i guess AVG is ok.. ive heard Pc-cillin is VERY good...

but in my opinion one of the VERY best out there is...

ESET Nod 32 antivirus..uses almost 0 resourses and almost 0 emory on ur pc...this thing has detected MANY things in real time that norton ever did; and ive tested it myself going to certain websites i know use exploits, etc, and norton didnt detect crap while NOD32 did...

i dont know the retail price on it, as i got it froma friend who had a couple of licenses...
or if ur into the torrent community you can find a copy..or pm me, its a 12Mb file...

 

That is too odd. I've had Norton on this laptop (it is a year old today) and my old one which had 1/2 gig of memory (this has 2 gigs), and have had this service for about 5 years now (from sbc to att, etc)--even moving the service from nor cal to socal--no problems with Norton, ever.

but I have heard good things of the free ones.

We use CA Anti-Virus. It has detected and deleted/quaranteened a lot of nasties that have tried to invade. A single license is good for three PCs.

I have a strong hardware firewall in my router (customized firmware, not the stock LinkSys firmware). Does an amazing job of keeping the intruders out....it's amazing watching the firewall log at times.

A couple years back, I had a major problem. People from that computer/software company created an additional "black Box" for me, as a gift. Works really well......and STOPS almost all SPAM, as an additional attribute.

Nope. It's a third party, Linux based firmware that runs on certain versions of LinkSys routers. They took the LinkSys firmware code (which LinkSys made publically available) and fixed all the bugs and beefed it up to be a lot more useful and secure.

 

I have used Norton for as long as I can remember then last year after installing the new edition everything turned into a pain. I have never been able to do a full virus scan without it locking up and as time has gone on my computer has gotten weirder and weirder. Finally now that my subscription is about up I got rid of it and that was no easy task either. You end up having to download the Norton software removal tool to get rid of it. My tech guy recommended the new Windows One Care that comes with firewall, virus protection and sets things up to automatically do defrags and backups too. It runs pretty seamlessly in the background and the best part is you can download a 90 day free trial and then after that it is $49.99 for up to three computers. You do have to renew every year but it's less than the new Norton for one computer and you can put this on three. To find it all you have to do is a search for Windows One Care. Oh and I forgot it is from Microsoft.
