PT Cruising Toward July 9 Build-Out
By Eric Mayne
WardsAuto.com, Jun 7, 2010 9:00 AM

The countdown to oblivion has begun for the iconic Chrysler PT Cruiser.

Chrysler Group LLC declines comment, but numerous sources tell Ward’s the C-segment hatchback is scheduled for build-out July 9.

“It’s a little bit bittersweet,” says Tom Gale, retired Chrysler design chief who helped develop the vehicle. “That car still looks good to me on the road.”

Cleverly crafted as a light truck, which afforded Chrysler an advantage in the face of corporate average fuel economy requirements, the PT Cruiser has been deemed out of step with the product plans that have evolved from the auto maker’s bankruptcy-induced alliance with Fiat Automobiles SpA.

I remember how badly I wanted one when they were first introduced and dealers were charging $3K-$5K premium above MSRP for them - talk about taking it in the shorts at trade-in time.
I'm glad I waited for Hharry...even if people DO think he's a PT.

I test drove a couple PT's shortly after they came out. I liked that it was different, just couldn't pull the trigger tho.. (Glad now)...

I wanted a PT Panel, but they couldn't build it profitably for the small volume..... they could have if the did it like GM did.

With the PT off into the sunset, its too bad GM doesn't squeeze a few more model years out of the HHR...

Although I'm not a Chrysler person, I really liked the PT, especially if it's done up right. I may be biased about how it's done, though

I was going to get either an HHR or a PT the day I went looking for a car....... bought the first one I drove, my HHR. No reason to look elsewhere.

I'm sure the PT is okay, I do like the style, but I've never been in one. Having owned several Plymouths back in the day, I know "Body Integrity" is not one of Chrysler's strong points..... I would expect a bucket of bolts, but runs like a champ after a few years. If the seats are all off set to the steering wheel, that would bug me....
