Real I.D. Drivers License
#11
You can use an up to date passport, and probably that card, to get a "real ID" but the id is a fancy drivers license... so you will still need to get that when your current license expires. Wouldn't matter which type of license you get if you also carry that passport card at all times. (needed for the above mentioned reasons)
I'm not sure if all states will even have a regular license option. There's gonna be a big "reaction" if some people can't renew their driver's license without tons of paperwork they don't have, but it could go that way...
Not wanting to get political but we are turning into a "show us your papers, old man" society.... I find it creepy.

Thanks everyone for your input. Much appreciated. I'll be gathering my papers, I have everything needed. Here (at least) it is said, that October is the deadline to get the Real ID license, "if" you will ever need to go into Federal Buildings or Fly. & I hear that even FDIC banks will require Real ID to do inside biz. That is still a personal choice. But I think that over time this will become the norm.
I agree w/ Greybeard, a passport 'should' be adequate, but I'd call your local DMV & check to be sure.
Yes things have been changing, especially after 9/11. Guess we need to change with them. My DL will be good for 8 years. My wifes already is.

Up here we’ve had the D/L and for international travel we must have our passport. It’s paper work and pictures.
But if it’s going to help keep us safer, so be it. All this has been since 9/11.

And thinking about it, We quite possibly might still need a passport for international travel. (I think ?)

I lived in ME in my teen years, and the border wasn't even manned at many crossings.
It was possible to drive over, drink, and return, without border control. There was literally an an orange cone in the road, so you slowed down, but that was it. Upstate NY, near Lake Champlain was the same in the 90s.
Amazing to consider.
