Schipperke? Any have one?

My wife and I are thinking about getting a small dog for our townhouse. One of the pooches we are interested in is the Schipperke.

Have read an awful lot about them but nothing is a substitute for real life testimony

Any advice or tips on this breed?

I have never heard of the breed, and neither has my sis-in-law, who works with dogs. I did a bit of online reading:

Sounds like a good dog, but it appears to be a shedder. Get a big vac for that! Good luck on your hound hunt!

I have never owned one, but I have known people who have,
20 lbs or so, likes to go on walks, plays nicely, most that I have know are inside/ outside dogs, do fine,,just depends how much attention they get growning up,,,and most of all what type of attention.

good luck!

Seems like the older generations in my family have all had that dog at one point or another. They either love you or hate you, and they're going to piss all over your stuff no matter what. If you get an ankle-chewer, kill it because you'll never get it to change its evil ways. You'll always know when the mail is delivered because the dog will bark like you dumped a pot of boiling water on it until you let it outside to maul the letter carrier inside his little van.

As the guardian of 2 ankle-biters (Chihuahua/Pomeranian mixes, 4 lbs and 10 lbs). With little dogs, it is how they are socialized that can make the difference in their personality!

Paquita and Maximo are very protective of me, but will also greet you with a ball to toss--they will out play most big dogs and since I live alone, their bark is a good alarm for me--gives me time to reach for the baseball bat at least!

But yeah...they are hard to potty train... but they've never tinkled on any of my stuff!

I rescued a schipperke from my old job. TWICE! First time, one of the residents of the community brought him to me to see if anyone had reported him missing. While walking him later that day he was claimed. 2 weeks later our handyman came in and asked if anyone reported missing a small black dog. He found him wandering down the middle of the street. I went out to the truck, opened the door and this little thing jumped into my arms and started snuggling me and nuzzling my chin. At that point, to me it was fate and he was going home with me. I did post fliers around the neighborhood & notified the pres. of the association that I had him. No one called.

When I showed him to my mom she fell in love so I passed him on to her. He is the SWEETEST little dog. He loves to cuddle. He does the cutest little prance when he gets excited. Next time I go over there I will try to snap a video on my phone to post for you. He does at times forget he is little and will growl and yap at bigger dogs. They always know when someone is coming to the door because he will yap at the front window. It's not a loud or high pitched yap so it really isn't annoying. He LOVES the water. Mom & dad have a pool and my neice takes him swimming with her. He is a great little house dog. He does get brushed daily and still sheds a bit, but it's nothing outrageous. He has a dainty appetite so feeding is a breeze. He isn't one for playing with toys. He would rather just snuggle with you and have you pet him. He was already completely house broken from day one, so I can't help with that. Ok, I have written a book. If you have any specific questions feel free to ask!!

I help rescue dogs that have been abandoned or abused and are about to be put to sleep. Before you buy a dog check with the dog rescues in your area and get one from them. I'm sure that breed has a rescue club as well.
