Scratchpad!
Here's a trick to making smooth starts when you're learning to drive a stick Julie.
With the engine running and the transmission in neutral, push in the clutch and select first gear. Then slowly let the clutch out until you see the tach needle start to drop as the clutch starts to engage. Push the clutch in, then let it out again until you hit the point where it starts to engage, as it engages feed in a little throttle this time.
Once you're starting to move, continue letting the clutch out while gently feeding in more throttle, and you'll move off smartly and smoothly.
Once you develop a "muscle memory" of the clutch's engagement point, your starts and shifts will become progressively smoother until your passengers only hear your shifts...not feel them.
The key is coordinating the throttle and clutch, you'll develop a feel for the right balance. If you "bunny hop", more throttle is required. If the engine "races", back off of the throttle.
