Of course, there's no such thing as a snipe. It's just cruel joke adolescent boys like to pull on each other. I guess you're it!
Well, actually there is a snipe! but it doesn't play into snipe hunting

Dang, can't remember the name of the 50's TEXAS movie - Father is a "man's man" - animal heads all over his den, guns everywhere and he knows how to use them --- and wants his son to learn to be a real man, not his mother's son.... won't acknowledge his illegitimate son, I think the rains come, the lands flood, huge scene on the Mexico border... Come on people, think! It all starts with a SNIPE HUNT.

Ahhh, I can sleep tonight... found it on IMDB - it was "Home From the Hill", 1960, Robert Mitchum, George Hamilton, George Peppard.

My personal favorite, to which I've been an unknowing accomplice, is the auto parts version of a snipe hunt, usually perpetrated by a know-it-all husband to get his wife out of the way so he can drink a beer. (Don't know this for a fact, but it seems like all of these but one have involved a woman making the call)

We receive a call from someone, usually a younger woman, asking us for one of the following "parts":
Kanuten Valve
Muffler Bearings
Headlight Fluid

Unfortunately, some of the more immature will call us with, "Yeah, I'm looking for a flux capacitor for a 1981 De Lorean."

They could also have asked for :

A Can of Vacuum
A Bucket of Screw Threads

Or a quart of blinker fluid and a tube of Elbow Grease. That's always good too!
