From what I remember of passing through a few years ago, St. Louis looked like a great place. I wasn't driving (thus not really paying attention to road names) but I do remember we went right across the bridge by the Arch in the above picture. It was awesome...

It would've seemed like more of a "gateway" if the arch was actually arched over the road.. That would be cool...

Maybe with a little counter on it.....

"You are the 11,233,124,654,346th vehicle to cross. Welcome to Missouri!"

I stopped to see the ARCH in July 2004 on vacation. It looks a heck of a lot bigger when you stand under it (bought the video tape on how it was made from their gift shop). The wife, son and I took the elevator to the top, what a view. Now I think about this past summer when they had trouble with one of the elevators and those people were stuck in it for a few hours. And for those that don't know, the elevator cars are really small. think of a HHR with no windows and a bunch of people in it. Went clear to the Pac ocean and all over . Put on over 8000 miles in 24 days by the time we got back to Oh. I'd love to do all over again.

YEP...

The Gateway Arch has a high tech tram system that takes you on a ride to the top.

Here's a picture of the inside of one of the tram pods inside the arch leg. Looks like something out of a sci fi movie... 5 small seats in each pod...

Big Kahuna, Thanks for the tram pix. I had forgotten what it was like. I took a lot of pixs at the arch when I was there but not of that tram pod. Remembered tight security also at the entrance like going through an airport. That came about because of 911. Had the same security when I toured Hoover Dam. That downtown area by the arch looked nice compared to a lot of big cities.

I have a love/hate relationship with St. Louis. I love the drive in, seeing the arch from way out on 64 coming in, THE ZOO ROCKS!! Then i usually get lost on my way over to the science center from the zoo side (i like to walk over 64, the glass panels in the floor are wild). Then i top it off with a trip to union station (had a guy try and carjack me once as i was leaving the "secure parking lot, he didnt like my .44) and cuss while trying to get back to 64 from that side. Its almost impossible!! for me anyway. I need a tourguide lol

Goose, we need to start coordinating our TDYs. I was at Scott last week, also. I spent the weekend with my dad in St. Louis and just got home a while ago. They want me back up there for a meeting on 15 Oct but I really don't want to make that trip again. Maybe my bosses with come through and tell Air Staff I can't go!

By the way, the Arch is an architectural wonder. If you ever get the chance to see the story about it's developement, you'll understand why!
