What's the deal with all this damn SPAM!!!???

It seems that there has been an increase in SPAM on this site recently. Why is that? Is there a reason, or is it random?

The word is out and the spamming has reached epic proportions:

Bot nets likely behind jump in spam
Robert Lemos, SecurityFocus

Estimates of the magnitude of the increase in junk e-mail vary, but experts agree that an uncommon surge in spam is occurring. On the low side, Symantec, the owner of SecurityFocus, has found that average spam volume has increased almost 30 percent for its 35,000 clients in the last two months. Others have seen much more significant jumps: Spam black list maintainer Total Quality Management Cubed has seen a 450 percent increase in spam in two months, and the amount of spam filtered out every week by security software maker Sunbelt Software has more than tripled compared to six months ago.

Apparently there are more people than ever that don't have anything better to do that mess with other people. The only way to get past all that is to have it where each person has to be approved before posting. The downside to that is the amount of time it occupies for admin and mods.

On some of the other forums where I post, the admin sends an email to the person after they join. If it's not a valid email address they are either banned or put on moderated posting.

Unfortunately the world is full of spammers...look at the junk mail we get in our snail mail and on our phones. It's neverending unfortunately.

They are annoying but good for a laugh sometimes. Like the one for the penis growth patch this morning.

I had to laugh at that one because that has to be one of the stupidest things I have ever heard of. I wonder if anyone is actually dumb enough to fall for it? Hell I wonder if anyone is dumb enough to fall for any type of spam?

My wife gets penis-growth e-mails all the time, and laughs hilariously at them as she trash-cans them.

I have a spamkiller program installed on my computer but it tends to delete the emails I want and leave the spam. There's another great invention!
