Shirley Vickery might want to consider heading to Las Vegas, or buying a lottery ticket at the very least.
Wednesday, her ticket stub was pulled from about 10,000 others at the Beecher Fourth of July car raffle, resulting in a brand new cranberry-colored Chevrolet HHR LT for the Momence woman.
The car is valued at $20,000, with its deluxe chrome wheels and tires plus painted graphics, said Joe Reising, longtime car raffle chairman and co-owner of R.L. Reising Chevrolet in Beecher, where the car was purchased by the Fourth of July Commission.
Vickery, who was out Thursday taking her new wheels for a spin around Beecher, said she and her husband Jack bought $100 worth of tickets -- something they've done for several years now.
In fact, she said the two have supported the raffle and event since before they were married, and that's 44 years now.
"We've been coming out about 50 years and I remember coming out here as a child," said Vickery of the Fourth of July festivities, which have been going on for 81 years.
One of the first things Vickery did in her new wheels was pick up her mother, 89-year-old Alice Doyal, a resident of Beecher Manor. Vickery works as a registered nurse there.
In fact, it was at work this morning that she found out her ticket was drawn, after her husband heard the message at home and gave her a call.
"I've had people all day asking me to rub their shoulder for luck," she laughed.
Vickery said she and her husband have won small items over the years, but nothing like this.
"The good Lord has blessed us very greatly," she said. "We're very thankful."
Proceeds for the raffle go toward improvements at Firemen's Park.
"We sure didn't anticipate winning," said Vickery. "We just wanted to support Beecher."

Post a picture if you can. I'd love to see what graphics they put on it. What a great story. You like see people win who enter contest for all the right reasons.
